Day 1: Arrival to Lima

On arrival to Lima you will be met at the airport by your English speaking guide and driver who will welcome you to Peru, help you with your luggage and take you by private transfer straight to your hotel. The drive takes about 45 minutes depending on traffic. The rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure.

Day 2: Highlights of Lima Tour

Enjoy a tour of Lima, the city of Kings, with a private local guide. Begin by exploring the historic centre and impressive main plaza where you can find the government palace, city hall and cathedral. Continue to the impressive Santo Domingo convent and the Larco Herrera museum, one of the best in the country. End with a snack made with the traditional fruit, lucuma, before returning to your hotel.

Day 3: Lima to Cusco

Morning flight from Lima to Cusco (about 1 hour 30 minutes) and transfer to your hotel. At about 1pm meet at the coffee museum where you will enjoy a tasty lunch whilst learning about the origins of coffee. After lunch enjoy a leisurely stroll around Cusco’s historic centre accompanied by an expert local guide. Visit the plaza de armas, cathedral, Qoricancha and San Pedro market. Evening at leisure.

Day 4: A day hike to nearby Inca ruins

After breakfast you will visit the impressive ruins of Sacsayhuaman which has great views of the surrounding valley. Continue to the Inca water temple of Tambo Machay before a delicious picnic lunch. After lunch take a trail that leads down through some fields to the Inca temple of the moon before continuing to walk along an old Inca path back into Cusco.

Day 5: Hike from Maras to Moray

Today you will leave Cusco behind traveling to the Sacred Valley and towards Machu Picchu. The first stop is at the fascinating circular terraces of Moray that the Incas constructed as an agricultural project. After this take a back road through farmers fields stopping for a homemade picnic on the way with mountain views. After lunch walk the rest of the way to the spectacular salt ponds of Maras where local families extract the salt by hand. Continue back to your hotel.

Day 6: Ollantaytambo & start of the Inca Trail

This morning set out from your hotel to visit the hilltop ruins of Ollantaytambo, an old Inca fortress, then you drive to the trail head at kilometre 82. Here you meet the porters and cooks who will accompany you on the trek. Whilst on the trail all you need to carry is a day-pack. Your luggage is carried by the porters, your tents are put up for you and your food is prepared for you. Start the hike after lunch as you hike to the first campsite where you camp beside the Llactapata ruins (2,788m / 9,146ft).

Day 7: A gentle climb on an old Inca path

After a hearty breakfast start the day with a steady climb up the Cusichaca valley. Continue on a beautiful Inca path past hummingbirds and cloud forest until you reach your camp at Llulluchapampa (3,680m / 12,073ft). This is a pretty, grassy area that has outstanding views and you may be even see the Andean deer that often comes to feed here.

Day 8: Dead Woman’s Pass

Today is the most challenging day of hiking but also the most exhilarating and rewarding! Start by climbing up to the spectacular Dead Woman’s Pass (4,212m / 13,819ft) the highest point of the trail before dropping into the Pacaymayu valley. On a clear day there are spectacular mountain views. From here continue past the Inca control post of Runkuracay before lunch. After lunch there are a few more ups and downs before you arrive to your spectacular campsite for the night, Phuyupatamarca, which means ‘the place above the clouds’ (3,650m / 11,975ft).

Day 9: Through the Sun Gate to Machu Picchu

Today is the day you will finally reach the iconic site of Machu Picchu! Wake up to a stunning view of clouds and snow capped mountains from outside of your tent. After breakfast descend through a cloud forest on Inca stairways to Wiñay Wayna, an Inca ruin. Just a little further and you reach Inti Punku, the gateway of the sun. As you step through the old stone gate-way, Machu Picchu appears! After some photos take the bus down to Aguas Calientes and your hotel. Enjoy the comfort of a shower and a well deserved beer (or two!) in the bar!

Day 10: Tour of Machu Picchu & train to Cusco

Built in a seemingly impossible location on the side of a jagged mountain Machu Picchu is Peru’s most iconic sight. This morning you will start early in order to explore the ruins before they get too busy. The guided tour takes around two hours, but you will also have ample free time to explore on your own. Eventually it is time to return to Cusco by train, a beautiful journey along the Urubamba river.

Day 11: Departure or extend your trip!

End your trip here or add on a visit to Lake Titicaca by train or bus and/or a visit to the Amazon jungle. You could even continue south into Bolivia or fly over to Iguazu Falls in Brazil! Please ask one of our specialists about creating your perfect trip!
