Minas Gerais & Ouro Preto Travel Guide

Overview

Minas Gerais is one of Brazil’s most historic states and most famous for the gold rush of the 18th century. Due to the discovery of gold several colonial towns sprung up in the region that today are fine examples of Baroque architecture. Ouro Preto with it’s narrow winding streets, 23 Baroque churches and dramatic setting on the hillside is one of the prettiest. Tiradentes is another endearing town with its horse drawn carriages, cobblestone streets and fine examples of mineiro art. It is possible to visit the oldest gold mine in Brazil in Mariana, a picturesque colonial town, whilst further south the Ibitipoca Reserve offers a taste of rural life.

With old colonial mining towns, striking baroque architecture and a colourful history, Minas Gerais is the best place to delve into Brazil's intriguing past
