Monteverde & Santa Elena
Originally a small Quaker settlement, Monteverde and the nearby Costa Rican village of Santa Elena are located up in the Tilarán mountain range. The area has two protected cloud forest reserves that are home to hundreds of species of birds including the iconic but rare resplendent quetzal. Although shrouded in cloud for much of the time, on a clear day it is possible to see from Monteverde right across to the Pacific Ocean and Nicoya Peninsular. Fantastic for hiking and zip-lining, Monteverde is one of Costa Rica’s highlights and premier destinations.
The relatively cooler climate of Monteverde is perfect for hiking and exploring the atmospheric and wildlife rich cloud forest reserves.
