ARGENTINA: PENINSULAR VALDES

Most visitors travel to Peninsular Valdes to see the migrating whales, but this intriguing area of coastal Patagonia with its collection of Welsh communities has a lot to offer the curious traveler

Peninsular Valdes on Argentina’s wild Patagonian coast is a protected nature reserve, a UNESCO world heritage site and is up there as one of the continent’s best places for watching wildlife. In season the main attraction are the Southern Right Whales that come to breed just offshore. You can also expect to see orcas, sea lions, magellanic penguins, guanacos, elephant seals and numerous birdlife. The surrounding area of the Eastern Chubut province has a fascinating history of human settlement and is home to a couple of Welsh villages where you can visit a traditional tea house.

Best Time To Visit Peninsular Valdes

Peninsular Valdes can be visited all year round although most visitors come between mid May and December which is the whale watching season. Earlier in the season (May – September) the whales can be seen from Puerto Madryn and Playa Doradillo and later in the season (October – December) they move north and are better seen from Puerto Piramides. January and February is still high season but the whales have moved on by then. There are still plenty of good reasons to visit this time of year to see the other wildlife and visit the Welsh villages.
