Remote and isolated Iquitos is the gateway to Peru’s vast northern Amazon region. The thick jungle is home to an astounding amount of exotic creatures such as the prehistoric looking pink dolphins and Amazon manatees.

Originally founded in the 18th century as a Jesuit mission, Iquitos has the interesting title of the world’s largest city that cannot be reached by road! Only accessible by boat or plane, isolated Iquitos is the starting point for luxury Amazon river cruises and trips into the northern Amazon. The river cruises often visit the Pacaya-Samiria national reserve, which is the largest national park in the country, and home to an astonishing array of wildlife and plant life including pink dolphins, giant river turtles, Amazon manatees and giant Victoria regia waterlilies.

Best Time To Visit Iquitos

Iquitos and the northern Amazon region remains hot and humid all year round with a high amount of rain. There are only really two different seasons, the high water season from December to May and the low water season from June to November. Overall we recommend visiting between April and October which is also a good time to visit the rest of Peru.
