COLCA CANYON | PERU

Why Visit the Colca Canyon in Peru?

"Travelling along the high altitude mountain passes of the deep and ancient Colca Canyon, through indigenous villages, with the Andean condors above, makes for an epic and memorable journey!"

The vast Colca Canyon is the second deepest canyon in the world and more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States. More impressive, however, than its considerable size is the variety of landscapes, scenery and culture it is home to. Replete with history, you will often see the local people wearing the decorative clothing traditional to the area. Most hotels are located in and around the main town of Chivay which is located at about 3650 metres. With it’s steep Andean roads, condors swirling above and trademark terraced hillsides, the Colca Canyon is a truly spectacular corner of Peru.

When is the Best Time to Visit the Colca Canyon in Peru?

This is another very dry area of Peru, however there is a wetter season from December until March. Therefore it is possible to visit most of the year. The best time to visit is between April and November when you have the best chance of seeing the condors. Although condors can be seen year round, there is more chance during the drier months. The best time to see the condors is either first thing in the morning or later in the afternoon. We recommend going in the afternoon if you want to avoid the crowds.
