About this tour

A popular tour for those most interested in nature and wildlife. You will have the chance to visit some excellent eco-lodges and interact directly with scientists carrying out conservation projects. Begin in The Central Valley to witness the bucolic countryside before traveling to the cloud forest of Villa Blanca, a leading private conservation reserve. Continue to Sarapiqui for nature walks and a chance to spot the endangered green macaw, then to Tortuguero for jungle canals. Finish on the beach at Puerto Viejo where you visit an animal sanctuary.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Meet and greet at airport, transfer to hotel

On arrival in San Jose you will be met by your friendly English speaking driver guide who will help you with your luggage and provide you with bottled water. You will be taken by private transfer straight to your hotel (about 30 minutes depending on traffic).

The rest of the evening is at leisure.

Day 2 - Guided tour of the Central Valley

After breakfast this morning you will be picked up at your hotel by your professional guide to start your full day tour of the Central Valley. Today you will visit Irazu volcano, the highest active volcano in Costa Rica, the Lankester botanical gardens and the bucolic landscapes of the Orosi valley. The tour begins at Irazu where a scenic road takes you right up to the top of the volcano at an elevation of 3,432 metres. On a clear day it is possible to see both the pacific and Caribbean coasts. You will be able to peer into the volcano’s several impressive craters. The next stop is at the Lankester botanical gardens which have been a centre for conservation and research of tropical plants since 1973. There are over 3000 species on display including an impressive collection of orchids. Finally you will visit the Orosi valley,
a beautiful rural area of Costa Rica. You will have the opportunity to visit a quaint colonial church before enjoying a typical lunch in a local restaurant.

Day 3 - Journey to your private Cloud Forest reserve

This morning you will be met at your hotel after breakfast by your private driver guide who will take you by private transfer directly to your hotel in the Central Cloud forest region. The drive takes about an hour.

On arrival you will be welcomed and taken to your room.

The rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure.

Day 4 - Quetzal tour & nocturnal nature walk

Breakfast is served early this morning before departing from the hotel lobby at about 07:15am. Along with your qualified naturalist guide you will drive for 45 minutes through the Central Highlands arriving to the Azahar Peak near the town of San Ramon. You arrive at a private, family operated farm where the Resplendent Quetzal nests from February until May. In the company of your professional guide, you will be led along the nature trails where you will be able to see footprints of wild boar and other mountain cats. You will be searching for the Quetzal, one of Costa Rica’s most mystical and beautiful birds. There are also a number of other higher altitude dwelling birds that can be seen along with monkeys and other wildlife. Lunch is included before returning to your hotel in the afternoon.

Guided Cloud Forest night walk

About 6pm this evening after the sun has gone down you will be met by your naturalist guide to begin your exploration of the Cloud Forest at night. In the company of your guide you will explore the private trails of the El Silencio de los Angeles cloud forest reserve and experience how the forest transforms itself at night. You will be able to observe fascinating creatures such as insects, snakes, frogs, spiders, sleeping birds and mammals. It is a great opportunity for night time photography and to experience the colourful creatures up close.

Day 5 - Day at leisure in the Cloud Forest

Today is a free day to further explore the area, take an optional excursion, or simply relax and enjoy the comforts of your hotel.

Day 6 - Villa Blanca to Sarapiqui

After breakfast this morning you will be met at your hotel by your private driver guide and taken by private transfer to your hotel in Sarapiqui. The drive is about 2 and a half hours.

On arrival you will be met and shown to your room.

The rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure.

Day 7 - Hiking the Almendro trail

Today you will embark on one of the best hikes within the Selva Verde private reserve accompanied by a professional, naturalist guide. The Almendro (almond) trees found within the reserve are among the oldest and largest remaining Almendro trees in all of Central America. These huge impressive trees are more than 600 years old and form an important part of the eco system. They are also vitally important to the endangered Great Green Macaw which relies on the tree’s fruit for food. Your naturalist guide will lead you into the depths of the reserve to admire these amazing trees whilst teaching you about the other flora and fauna that can be found in the forest.

Day 8 - Day at leisure in Sarapiqui

Today is a free day to relax or take one of the many optional excursions available. There are guided nature walks, night hikes, birdwatching tours, white water rafting, canopy tours, boat trips, chocolate tours and more. Please let us know if you would like us to arrange an additional excursion.

Day 9 - Journey to Tortuguero

This morning you will be met at your hotel early before breakfast by your private driver guide who will take you by private transfer to the town of Guapiles (about 1 hours drive).

On arrival you will be met by representatives of Evergreen Lodge who will accompany you the rest of the way to the lodge. There is time for a typical breakfast before continuing for another 1.5 hours to the dock at Caño Blanco.

Once at the dock there is time for a brief comfort break before boarding the boat that will take you the remaining way to the lodge. Accompanied by a naturalist guide, the boat trip is a great opportunity to spot wildlife. The boat trip lasts approximately 1.5 – 2 hours arriving in time for lunch.

Upon arrival to the lodge you will greeted with a welcome drink and taken to your room. A buffet lunch is served.

The rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure to relax by the pool, enjoy the private jungle nature trails or use the free kayaks provided by the lodge.

Day 10 - Explore the jungle canals by boat

Today you will embark on a boat trip along the canals of Tortuguero national park. Your guide will explain the history of the park and the conservation efforts that are made to protect the incredible biodiversity that exists within it. Spend the day spotting caiman, several types of monkeys, hundreds of species of birds, sloths, river turtles, many different lizards and sometimes even Jaguar (although they are extremely rare).  Return to the lodge for lunch.

Guided visit to the Sea Turtle museum and Tortuguero village

This afternoon after lunch you will be met by your guide and taken to the nearby Tortuguero village. You will visit a sea turtle museum where there will be a short presentation on the sea turtle conservation efforts in the area. After this you continue to the village where you will learn about the 1200 inhabitants way of life. There will be some free time to look in the shop and relax before returning by boat to the lodge in time for dinner.

Top Tip: Tortuguero is one of the wettest areas in Costa Rica. Even in the dry season you can expect some showers. Make sure you bring a light waterproof or poncho as the boats have no roof in order to maximise wildlife viewing opportunities. Binoculars, sun cream and quick-drying clothes are also recommended.

Day 11 - Journey down the Caribbean coast

Breakfast is served this morning before boarding the boat at the private dock that will take you back to Caño Blanco (about 1.5 – 2 hours). On arrival to Caño Blanco there is time for some refreshments before driving back to the town of Guapiles (about 1.5 hours).

At Guapiles lunch is included at a local restaurant and you will be met by your private driver guide. After lunch you will be taken by private transfer to your hotel in Puerto Viejo (about a 2.5 hour drive). The rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure.

Days 12 - Visit an animal rescue centre

You will be picked up at your hotel after breakfast to begin the tour. Accompanied by your local bilingual guide, you begin by visiting the animal rescue centre. Run by two biologists, the centre takes in and treats unwell or wounded wild animals from the South Caribbean area with the aim of rehabilitating them and re-introducing them back into the wild. At any one time there are hundreds of animals including sloths, wild cats, monkeys, owls, eagles, snakes, frogs and more. You will have the opportunity to get up close to these animals and learn about the fantastic conservation work the centre does. After this you will continue to the house of a local indigenous family who have set up their own chocolate farm. In the company of your guide you will learn about the process of making chocolate and taste the final product. Finally, your guide will lead you on a short nature hike through the jungle to reach a hidden, 12 metre high waterfall in the Talamanca mountains. There is some time to take a refreshing dip in the pristine natural pool beneath the waterfall before returning to your hotel.

Important Note: As a transitional centre, the exact numbers and species of animals at the rescue centre varies all the time. At any one time, however, the centre houses about 130 animals, most of which are mammals.

Top Tip: We recommend taking good hiking shoes and if you want to swim in the waterfall you will need a towel, swimming costume and change of clothes. Don’t forget your camera too!

Days 13 & 14 - At leisure on the beach

Free days at leisure to relax on the beach, take some more excursions or enjoy the comforts of your hotel.

Other excursions include kayaking, snorkeling, cycling, visits to indigenous villages and more. Please let us know if you would like us to organise an additional excursion.

Day 15 - Transfer to the airport for departure
