About this tour

A tour designed for families that has a bit of everything – nature, educational activities, relaxation and top accommodation. Begin in San Jose before taking a spectacular light aircraft flight to the Osa Peninsular to stay in one of National Geographic’s most unique lodges in the world. Hike nature trails and take a surfing lesson before continuing to the Central Valley to stay in a luxury cloud forest hotel and visit a chocolate farm. After this fly to the Nicoya Peninsula for incredible views and family friendly activities.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Meet and greet at airport, transfer to hotel

On arrival in San Jose you will be met by your friendly English speaking driver guide who will help you with your luggage and provide you with bottled water. You will be taken by private transfer straight to your hotel (about 30 minutes depending on traffic). Evening at leisure.

Our recommendation: For your evening meal we recommend the restaurant at your hotel, the Grano de Oro. Set around an open air courtyard, it is one of the best in the city and well worth a visit.

Day 2 - Light aircraft flight & 4x4 rainforest transfer

This morning after breakfast you will be met at your hotel by your private driver guide and taken to the airport for your short, 50 minute flight to Puerto Jimenez on the Osa Peninsular. Travelling in a light aircraft, the small plane flies low to allow for amazing views of Costa Rica from above.

On arrival to Puerto Jimenez you will be met by representatives of Lapa Rios and taken by 4×4 the remaining way to the lodge. It is about a 50 minute drive through the rainforest and your guides will point out different birds, monkeys and other wildlife along the way. After arriving and checking in lunch will be served.

Days 3 to 5 - Activities at your rainforest lodge

Whilst at Lapa Rios you have included your choice of daily on site activities led by the resident naturalist guides. These include hiking the child friendly trails to hidden waterfalls, bird watching tours, star fish walks along the beach, the Osa trail, local medicine tour, Matapalo nature tour, surfing lessons and more. These activities are specially designed to be child friendly and you will be able to see sloths, macaws, toucans, monkeys and more. You also have included an optional visit to the Carbonera school which is a school that was built and sponsored by the lodge. This is a great way to interact with the local community.

Lapa Rios Lodge is not recommended for children under the age of six. Speak to your dedicated Costa Rica specialists about selecting the perfect hotels for you and your family.

Day 6 - Journey to your luxury cloud forest reserve

After breakfast you will return by 4×4 to the airstrip at Puerto Jimenez (about a 50 minute drive) for your light aircraft flight back to San Jose (about 1 hour).

On arrival to San Jose you will be met by your private driver guide who will take you by private transfer directly to your hotel in the Central Valley (about 1 hour).

You will be greeted at the lodge by your eco concierge and taken to your suite. The rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure.

Day 7 - Private tour of a chocolate farm

This morning after breakfast you will be met by your private driver and guide for the day and set off to a nearby cacao plantation to learn about the process of making chocolate. After about an hour’s drive you will arrive at the organic chocolate plantation. Your private guide will take you on a tour of the property and explain to you how the cacao bean is processed into chocolate. They will also teach you about the history of chocolate making and how it was one of the most important products for the ancient Aztec and Maya civilisations. You will also have the opportunity to make your own chocolate from cracking open the raw fruit to hand grinding and adding your own flavours!

Day 8 - Day at leisure in the Cloud Forest

A day to explore El Silencio’s verdant 500 acre private reserve and enjoy the comforts of your own luxury bungalow. You can explore 6 miles of private hiking trails taking you past beautiful creeks, a hummingbird garden and three hidden waterfalls. You can also participate in a complimentary tree planting ceremony. There is an excellent spa and a wide range of other activities such as zip lining, waterfall rappelling, oxcart painting, wine tasting, a visit to the local village, pick your own vegetables in the organic garden, coffee tours, horse riding and many more. Day 9 - Journey to the Nicoya Peninsula

After breakfast you will be met at your hotel by your private guide and taken by private transfer to the airport for you light aircraft flight to the Nicoya Peninsula. The flight takes just under an hour.

On arrival to the airstrip you will be greeted and taken by private transfer to your hotel.

After checking in to your private villa the rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure.

Days 10 to 12 - Activities on the Pacific coast

Whilst at Punta Islita you have included a choice of daily on site activities. These include a canopy zip line, horse riding on the beach, guided nature hikes, wildlife spotting tours, birdwatching tours, cultural activities, visits to nearby villages, cooking classes, cocktail making classes, pilates, yoga and more. There are also a couple of nearby conservation projects that guests are invited to visit.

Day 13 - Transfer to the airport for departure

Check-out and private transfer from your hotel to the airport (about 4 hours) for your return international flight.
