Itinerary

Day 1 - Meet and greet at airport, transfer to hotel

On arrival in San Jose you will be met by your friendly English speaking driver guide who will help you with your luggage and provide you with bottled water. You will be taken by private transfer straight to your hotel (about 30 minutes depending on traffic). Evening at leisure.

Our recommendation: For your evening meal we recommend the restaurant at your hotel, the Grano de Oro. Set around an open air courtyard, it is one of the best in the city and well worth a visit.

Meals Included: None today

Suggested Accommodation: Grano de Oro

Day 2 - Rafting to your luxury rainforest lodge

Early this morning you will be met at your hotel by representatives of Pacuare to start your journey to the lodge. It is about a 2 hour drive in an air conditioned mini bus to the Pacuare River with a stop along the way at a local restaurant for breakfast. Once you arrive to the river you will be given a safety briefing by the team before starting the rafting part of the journey.

The raft in to the lodge takes about 1.5 hours in total arriving at approximately noon in time for lunch. These rapids are class II and III which are considered perfect for beginners. There is no previous experience required for the rafting part of the journey although there is a minimum age of 12 years old and it is not recommended for pregnant women. Your luggage will be taken by land to the lodge and will be waiting for you on arrival. The rest of the afternoon and evening is at your leisure.

Day 3 - Waterfall hike & unique canopy dinner

This morning after breakfast you will be met by your private guide for the day and set off along the trail through the rainforest. It begins with a steep climb through the jungle until you reach the mule trail which is one of the oldest tracks in the reserve that has been used by the indigenous Cabecar community for generations. After this you continue onto the Jabas trail which includes a series of switchbacks. Along the way your private guide will explain the intriguing history and geography of the area as well as pointing out different types of flora and fauna. Finally you will hike down the ‘path of puma’ and through the Nairi Awari Indigenous reserve to arrive at the spectacular hidden waterfall. Here you stop for a delicious picnic lunch in this scenic location. After lunch you hike back through a Cabécar traditional village before arriving to Pacuare Lodge.

This is the most challenging hike available at Pacuare Lodge and is recommended for people of moderate fitness who enjoy hiking in remote and wild areas. The whole duration is approximately 6 – 7 hours including time spent at the waterfall and eating lunch.

This is just one of the available activities, please speak to your Latin America travel advisor about arranging activities that are perfectly suited to your interests.

Private romantic canopy dinner

This evening you will have a unique private canopy dinner on a platform built around an old ceiba tree suspended 60 feet off the ground. To get to this secluded private tree house in the middle of the rainforest you will have to glide down a 130 metre zip line with the help of a guide. Only lit by candlelight you will enjoy an unforgettable meal amongst the tree tops as you watch the fireflies twinkling around you.

Day 4 - Rafting trip and transfer to Arenal

After breakfast this morning you will begin your departure from the lodge by river raft. Start with a safety briefing before beginning the adventure along the most beautiful part of the Pacuare River. Rafting out of the lodge takes between 2.5 and 4 hours depending on the water level and there will be a stop along the way for lunch on the river bank. These rapids are class III and IV and are slightly faster and more challenging than the way in to the lodge. Your luggage will be taken by land to the river out point.

Private transfer to Arenal

After arriving to the river out point you will be met by your private driver guide and taken by private transfer to your hotel in Arenal (about a 3.5 hour drive). Upon arrival to Nayara you will be greeted with a welcome drink and shown to your room. The rest of the afternoon and evening is at your leisure.

Meals Included: Breakfast & Lunch

Suggested Accommodation: Nayara Hotel

Day 5 - Zip lining in Arenal

This morning you will be collected at your hotel and taken to the start of the canopy tour. You will begin by receiving your equipment and a brief safety demonstration before boarding the aerial tram which will take you up the mountain to the start of the zip lines. The aerial tram affords excellent views of the surrounding area and howler monkeys can often be seen playing in the trees below. Once at the top you will start the descent via the seven cables, the longest of which is 760 metres. You will reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour and can enjoy the unique and impressive views of the volcano, lake and rainforest below. After the tour you will be dropped back at your hotel.
