Itinerary

Day 1 - Meet and greet at airport, transfer to hotel

On arrival to Quito you will be met by your private English speaking guide and driver who will welcome you to Ecuador, help you with your luggage and take you by private transfer to your hotel (about a 1 hour drive).

The rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure.

Day 2 - Private city tour of Quito

This morning you will be met at your hotel by your private local guide to begin your tour of historic Quito. Famously declared a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO in 1978, Quito’s picturesque old town is full of narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed walls and spectacular baroque churches. You will start the tour by walking through the historic centre accompanied by your guide who will teach you about the long history of the city. You will visit the main plaza where the cathedral, government palace and some of the most important 16th and 17th century churches including the San Francisco monastery can be found. After this you continue on to La Ronda street where you will learn about the traditional crafts and trades in colonial Quito. Finally to end the tour you will visit the spectacular Panecillo Hill for incredible views over the city and the famous Panecillo virgin.

Day 3 - Day at leisure in Quito

Spend a day browsing the artisan shops, stop for coffee in a little cafe, visit one of Quito’s many museums or simply relax in your hotel. Let us know if you would like us to arrange an additional excursion for today.

Day 4 - Northern highlands by train

Early this morning you will be met at your hotel at about 06:00am by your private driver who will take you to the Swissotel to meet up with the rest of the Tren Crucero passengers. After joining up with the group you will leave at approximately 06:30am from the Swissotel for a 1.5 hour drive north of Quito to Otavalo. A box breakfast is provided whilst on the bus. On arrival to Otavalo a restored steam engine is waiting for your first train journey from Otavalo to Ibarra through Ecuador’s Lake District. Today you will experience and learn about the traditional culture in this part of the Andes. You will hear some Andean music and there will be a traditional textile weaving demonstration. There is a guided tour of the textiles museum at Imbabura and you will also get to witness the master woodcarvers at work in San Antonio de Ibarra. Lunch is at Hacienda La Compañia in a beautiful dining room where you will have the opportunity to taste the local Andean cuisine. On the way back to Quito in the afternoon there will be a visit to Rose plantation where these beautiful flowers are grown for export. On arrival to Quito you will check in to the Swissotel for the night.

Day 5 - Avenue of Volcanoes on the Tren Crucero

After an early breakfast you are driven from your hotel to Quito’s Chimbacalle train station to begin the journey south along the iconic Avenue of Volcanoes. On a clear day you will be able to spot up to twenty volcanoes along the route from the train. A stop is made at El Boliche near Cotopaxi volcano where there will be a short guided hike in the Andean forest before a box lunch is served back on board the train. As we continue south along the fertile valley you can enjoy the spectacular scenery from the comfort of the luxury cars. At this point we steadily increase in altitude finally arriving to Urbina, the highest point in the journey at about 3600 metres above sea level. Here, in the shadow of the giant Chimborazo volcano, you will have a guided visit to the artisan’s square and meet the last ice merchant to learn about this ancient ancestral trade. This afternoon you check in to your comfortable country hacienda in Riobamba and have some free time before dinner.

Day 6 - The Devil's Nose pass

After a hearty breakfast this morning you continue on the train from Riobamba towards Colta where the Spanish conquistadores built their first settlement in Ecuador. This is another beautiful journey past bright purple, yellow and red quinoa fields and indigenous villages. There is a stop at Guamote for a guided visit to one of the last indigenous markets in the Andes before getting back on the train for lunch. After lunch you arrive at Alausí which is where the infamous Devil’s Nose pass begins. This dramatic part of the track is one of the highlights of the whole trip. The descent zigzags 450 metres down the side of the mountain taking you from the Andean highlands towards the lower coastal plains. After the Devil’s Nose the journey continues along the Chanchán river gorge and across a cloud forest before arriving to Bucay.

Day 7 - Coastal hacienda & chocolate tasting

After breakfast this morning you board the train again for a journey through a totally different landscape of pineapple, banana, rice and sugar cane plantations. There is a stop for lunch at a traditional coastal hacienda where you will have the opportunity to learn about the production of cocoa and how it is processed into some of the finest chocolate on the planet! After lunch you take the final part of the journey, the four carriages pulled by an original steam locomotive, finally arriving to the train station at Duran. From here you will be taken by bus the remaining way tom your hotel in Guayaquil. The rest of the evening is at leisure.
