Itinerary

Day 1 - Meet and greet at the airport

On arrival to Guayaquil you will be met by your friendly driver and guide who will welcome you to Ecuador, help you with your bags and take you by private transfer to your hotel (about 30 minutes).

The rest of the evening is at leisure.

Day 2 - Chocolate tasting tour

This morning you will be met at your hotel by your private guide and driver for the day. Ecuador is famous worldwide for producing some of the finest chocolate on the planet. Today you will have the chance to visit a traditional hacienda and cocoa plantation, learn about the process of making chocolate and enjoy a tasting. The day starts with an hours drive outside of the city through the tropical lowlands populated with fruit plantations. Once at the hacienda you will have the opportunity to taste the chocolate and learn more about the production process. Accompanied by your guide you will have a tour of the hacienda and learn about the local Montubio culture. A traditional gourmet country lunch is prepared for you using local ingredients. There is some time to enjoy other activities such as biking, short hikes, swimming or even milking a cow before returning to your hotel late afternoon.

SUGGESTION: We recommend you take a light poncho or waterproof in case of rain, especially between January and May. Good shoes, a swim suit in case you want to swim, insect repellent and sun protection is also recommended.

Day 3 - Flight to the Galapagos & boarding your yacht

This morning you will be met at your hotel and taken by private transfer to the airport for your short flight to Baltra island in the Galapagos. Exact flight times to be confirmed.

On arrival to Baltra you will be welcomed by the Isabela II expedition team who will accompany you by ferry to Santa Cruz island. From here you take a 30 minute bus ride to the highlands where you will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch there may be time for a short hike in the highlands.

Puerto Ayora & the Charles Darwin Research Station

This afternoon you will be driven back down from the highlands to visit the Charles Darwin Research Station. This is the Galapagos headquarters of scientific research, investigation and conservation in the national park. Here you will be able to learn more about the archipelago and the various conservation initiatives. You will also be able to see the Giant Tortoises, one of the most emblematic species of the Galapagos. There is also a giant prickly pear cactus forest that is home to many species of land birds. After the guided visit you will take a stroll through the main street of Puerto Ayora before boarding the Isabella II yacht. Once checked in to your cabin you can enjoy the captain’s welcome cocktail and dinner.

NOTE: You only board the yacht at the end of today, so we recommend you wear comfortable clothes, good shoes and take a small backpack with sun cream, insect repellent and anything else you may need for today.

Day 4 - Post Office Bay & Punta Cormorant on Floreana

Post Office Bay & Baroness Cove

After breakfast this morning you will land at Post Office Bay, a historic site on Floreana island with a fascinating human history. You will visit the famous barrel that has served as a post box for over two centuries. Sailors would leave letters here for passing ships to collect and return home to England or America. After a short walk there is time for some snorkerling from the beach.

Punta Cormorant

After lunch you visit Punta Cormorant where there will be a light hike along the beach to a brackish lagoon where flamingos and other birds can often be seen. On the other side of the island you visit a white sand beach where sea turtles frequently come to nest at night. There is another opportunity for snorkeling at Champion Islet or there is the option to go in the glass bottom boat or ride in the panga boat.

Day 5 - Punta Suarez & Gardner Bay on Española

Punta Suarez

Española is the southernmost island of the archipelago and home to a variety of endemic species. It is also the island where the Waved Albatros congregate (April – January) and perform their dramatic mating rituals. This morning you will visit Punta Suarez for an exciting walk along lava terrain. There are several unique sea bird colonies such as boobies, swallow-tail gulls, mockingbirds and many more. You should also be able to see the red and black marine iguanas along the shore and the famous ‘blowhole’ when seawater is forced 20 metres into the air. Return to the yacht for lunch on board.

Gardner Bay

In the afternoon you land at Gardner Bay, a white sand beach and renown as one of the most beautiful in the Galapagos. You are greeted by a colony of sea lions lazing in the sun and finches, galapagos hawks, marine iguanas and much more can be observed. The snorkeling in this area is particularly good or you can choose to kayak or take a ride in the glass bottom boat.

Day 6 - Punta Pitt & Cerro Brujo on San Cristobal

Punta Pitt

This morning you wake up at San Cristobal island, one of only four inhabited islands in the Galapagos and where the administrative capital (Puerto Baquerizo Moreno) is located. You land at the eastern tip of the island and begin a trail that leads from the beach uphill providing incredible views of the shoreline. This is the only site in the Galapagos where all three species of boobies can be observed together. There are also two species of frigatebird and a colony of bachelor sea lions. There is an opportunity to swim and snorkel at the end of the walk from the beach or hop into the panga boat for a ride along the coast.

Cerro Brujo

After lunch you set out on the panga boats again to ride along the shore of San Cristobal arriving at Cerro Brujo. Cerro Brujo (witch hill) is an expansive white sand beach which is fantastic for walking, birdwatching and excellent views. This site also has a historic significance as it is the same place Charles Darwin walked back in 1835. After the walk there is some time to swim and snorkel before returning to the yacht for some relaxation time before dinner.

Day 7 - Return flight to Quito

After breakfast this morning you disembark and are taken to the airport on San Cristobal island for your return flight to Quito. Exact flight times to be confirmed.

On arrival to Quito you will be met at the airport by your private driver and taken by private transfer to your hotel (about an hour).

After checking in to your room the rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure.

NOTE: The exact itinerary and program of excursions for the Galapagos may vary according to weather and ocean conditions and national park policies and regulations.

Day 8 - Quito & the equator private tour

This morning after breakfast you will be met at your hotel by your private guide and driver. You begin the tour in the historic heart of Quito, the UNESCO protected old town which is renown for being one of the prettiest colonial centres in all of Latin America. Accompanied by your local guide you will walk through Plaza de Independencia which includes the impressive cathedral, presidential palace and other government buildings. Your guide will then take you around the La Compañia de Jesús church which has one of the most incredible golden interiors. You will also visit the monastery of San Francisco, one of the most beautiful religious buildings in Latin America. After this you get in the car and drive 16 miles outside of the city to visit the exact middle of the world where you have the novelty of standing with one foot in the northern hemisphere and one foot in the southern! Your guide will take you around the ethnographic museum and inside the monument. You will be returned to your hotel in Quito by early afternoon in time for lunch.

Day 9 - Journey to the Cloud Forest

This morning you will be picked up at your hotel in Quito and taken by shared transfer along with other guests of Mashpi only to the lodge. The drive takes around 2.5 hours past rural farming communities and archeological sites. The final part of the journey is along an unpaved road before arriving to the lodge mid morning. After settling into your room there is time to relax before lunch is served.

Whilst at Mashpi Lodge all excursions within the reserve are included. Each day you can choose from any of the activities on offer hosted by the team of resident naturalist guides. Every guide has been educated to university level and is a specialist in their field. You may wish to visit the hummingbird garden, take a hike to a hidden waterfall, go birdwatching or learn more about butterflies in the Life Centre. There is also a fantastic observation tower where you can get an incredible view of the entire reserve. The sky bike is another exciting excursion where you can pedal through the cloud forest gaining a unique perspective. During the evening the naturalist guides prepare special lectures and presentations on the on-going conservation work carried out in the reserve. There is also an opportunity to go on a night walk and experience the cloud forest after dark.

NOTE: All your meals and excursions within the reserve are included in your stay at Mashpi Lodge. Alcoholic drinks, spa treatments, the dragonfly gondola and discretionary gratuities are not included.

Day 10 - Activities in the Cloud Forest

Today you have a choice of included on site activities. You may also wish to take a ride on the Dragonfly Gondola, a dramatic 2 kilometer cable car suspended high in the cloud forest canopy. Accompanied by your naturalist guide the trip takes two hours in total gliding through the cloud forest with an opportunity to spot lots of birds, sloths, monkeys and other wildlife. This excursion has an additional cost, please let us know if you would like us to include it for you.

TOP TIP: The dragonfly gondola is not recommended for sufferers of vertigo!

Day 11 - Morning activities then departure

This morning there is time for some more excursions walking the cloud forest trails or discovering another waterfall. After lunch you check out and are taken by private transfer to the airport (about 2.5 hours) for your return international flight.
