About this tour

A fantastic itinerary that includes two of Latin America’s greatest destinations, the Galapagos islands and Machu Picchu. Begin in Quito, Ecuador’s sedate capital city, before flying to the Galapagos for a four night cruise. Return to the mainland and fly onto Lima for fantastic food and museums. Travel on to the Inca city of Cusco before taking the train to Machu Picchu. End with a couple of nights in the Sacred Valley or extend your trip by going south to Lake Titicaca or even Brazil.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Meet and greet at airport, transfer to hotel

On arrival to Quito you will be met at the airport by your friendly English speaking guide and driver who will welcome you to Ecuador, help you with your luggage and take you by private transfer straight to your hotel (about 1 hour).

The rest of the evening is at leisure.

Day 2 - Colonial walking tour of Quito

You will be met at your hotel by your private guide who will be leading you on an informative walking tour of Quito’s main historic sites. Quito’s old town and historic heart is known as one of the most beautiful and well preserved in all of Latin America. In 1978 it was formally protected and declared a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO. The walking tour begins in the main plaza where your guide will point out the cathedral, government palace, several 16th and 17th century churches and the San Francisco monastery dating from 1534. You will visit some of these buildings and your guide will explain the history of Ecuador’s capital city. You will also pay a visit to La Ronda street, a pretty street where you will learn about the traditional trades in Quito. After the tour you will be returned to your hotel.

Day 3 - Flight to Galapagos & transfer to your yacht

After breakfast this morning you are picked up at your hotel and taken by private transfer to the airport or your flight to the Galapagos islands via Guayaquil.

On arrival to Baltra Island you will be greeted by members of the crew and taken directly to your yacht.

After checking into your cabin you have some free time to settle in before lunch and a welcome briefing.

El Chato Reserve Santa Cruz Island

This afternoon you will visit the El Chato Reserve in the Santa Cruz highlands. The reserve is a fantastic place to spot Giant Tortoises in the wild who cross the reserve on their migration from the coast to the highlands. The reserve is also a great place to see the beautiful Scalesia forests and a wide variety of birds such as the short eared owl, Darwin’s finches, vermilion flycatchers, yellow warblers, Galapagos rails and paint billed crakes. After the nature walk you will return to the yacht for dinner.

Day 4 - Santa Cruz Island

This morning after breakfast you will visit Dragon Hill on Santa Cruz island. This visitor site is located in the north west of Santa Cruz and is made up of a 1600 metre long trail that winds through three distinct areas. It is a dry landing on a very rocky beach and at high tide it is a fantastic spot for snorkerling. Some of the wildlife that can be seen at this site include frigatebirds, herons, blue footed boobies, rays and reef sharks. Return to the yacht for lunch.

Bachas Beach

This afternoon there is a wet landing on Bachas beach located on the north shore of Santa Cruz island. This is a great beach for swimming and you will also be able to see an old floating pier which is one of the few remnants of the U.S. World War II presence in the Galapagos. Some of the wildlife that can be seen at this site include flamingos, sally lightfoot crabs, hermit crabs, black-necked stilts and whimbrels. This beach is also a popular nesting site for sea turtles.

Return to the yacht for some free time before dinner.

Day 5 - Floreana Island

Today you will spend exploring Floreana Island, one of the most fascinating islands for human history in the Galapagos with the mysterious tale of the first settlers. This morning there is a wet landing on the beach at Post Office Bay, a famous spot where 18th century sailors placed a wooden barrel for use as an unofficial post box. The idea is that passing ships on the way back to Europe or America will deliver the letters that were left there. This custom exists to this day! Your guide will lead you on short hike along the lovely sandy beach and there will be some time for snorkeling too.

Cormorant Point and Devil’s Crown

After lunch there is another wet landing at Cormorant Point where you will enjoy a short hike to a saltwater lagoon which is often frequented by flamingos. You will also have the opportunity to swim and snorkel in the crystal clear waters of the Devil’s Crown, widely known as the best snorkeling site in the Galapagos. The Devil’s Crown is an extinct volcano that peaks out of the water and offers a fantastic underwater experience. Expect to see lots of colourful tropical fish, sharks, rays and beautiful rock formations.

Day 6 - Española Island

Española is the southernmost island of the Galapagos archipelago and most famous for being the breeding site of almost the entire world population of Waved Albatross. Densely populated with a huge variety of birds and other wildlife, Española is often one of the highlights of any Galapagos trip. The morning visit today starts with a dry landing at Punta Suarez. Here you will start the trail where you will be able to see lots of blue footed boobies, albatrosses and Nazca boobies. There is also a beautiful point along the cliff that the albatrosses use as a launching pad. You will also see the famous blowhole which is a fantastic spot for photography. Hood mockingbirds, red billed tropic birds, lava lizards, Galapagos hawk, red and green marine iguanas and Darwin’s finches are just some of the wildlife you can expect to see.

Gardner Bay

This afternoon there is a wet landing on Gardner Bay, one of the most spectacular beaches in the Galapagos. You will be greeted by a colony of Sea Lions basking in the sun on the white sand and curious mockingbirds. You will be able to swim with sea lions, snorkel and enjoy an afternoon on the beach.

Day 7 - San Cristobal Island & return to the mainland

This morning you wake up at San Cristobal island, one of only four inhabited islands in the Galapagos and where the administrative capital is based. You will visit the renown Interpretation Centre which opened in 1998 as a centre for conservation. Here you will learn a bit more about the natural history of the islands and the current conservation projects. After this you will be taken to the airport for your return flight to Guayaquil.

On arrival to Guayaquil you will be met at the airport by your private driver and taken directly to your hotel (about 30 minutes).

The rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure.

Day 8 - Flight to Lima

Private transfer from your hotel to the airport (about 30 minutes) for your direct flight to Lima.

On arrival to Lima you will be met at the airport by your private driver and guide who will welcome you to Peru, help you with your luggage and take you by private transfer directly to your hotel.

The rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure.

Day 9 - City tour of Lima & Larco Herrera Museum

This morning you will be picked up at your hotel to begin your half day shared guided tour of Lima. The first stop on the tour will be at Lima’s historic centre and main plaza. Here we will find the impressive government palace, city hall and cathedral which are all fine examples of Lima’s colonial architecture. You will visit the cathedral to learn about the building’s Renaissance and Neo-classical architectural style and Peru’s interesting religious history. After this you continue to the 17th century San Francisco Convent and visit the ancient underground catacombs. After exploring the city you visit one of Lima’s most important museums, the Larco Herrera Museum, in the Pueblo Libre district. This attractive 18th century mansion now houses an impressive permanent collection of ancient artifacts including, pottery, ceramic art and jewelry which provide an important insight into pre-Columbian history. At the end of the tour you will be dropped back at your hotel, or you can ask to be dropped at a restaurant for lunch.

Day 10 - Lima to Cusco

After breakfast this morning you will be met at your hotel and taken by private transfer to the airport (about 1 hour) for your direct flight to Cusco.

On arrival to Cusco you will be met at the airport by your friendly driver and guide who will take you by private transfer directly to your hotel in the city (about a 15 minute drive). The rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure.

TOP TIP: Your hotel is just a short walk away from several great restaurants that you can try for lunch!

Day 11 - Tour of Cusco & nearby archeological sites

This morning you will be picked up at your hotel after breakfast to begin the half day tour of Cusco, the imperial Inca city. You start the tour at one of the most impressive buildings in the historic centre of Cusco, the Qoricancha (golden temple). At the time of the Inca empire this temple was dedicated to the worship of the Sun God and the interior walls were once completely covered in gold. From here you stroll through Cusco’s main plaza and visit the impressive cathedral which contains an exquisite collection of 17th and 18th century paintings by the Cusco school of painters. After this we drive slightly outside of the city to the nearby ruins of Tambomachay, an old Inca system of aqueducts and canals. You also visit Quenko, a religious site where sacrifices and mummification took place, and Puka Pukara the red fortress. The tour ends by visiting the spectacular Sacsayhuaman, an ancient citadel built using enormous stones carved and fitted together tightly without mortar. From here there is a good view over Cusco. After the tour you will be taken back to your hotel.

Day 12 - The train to Machu Picchu!

After breakfast in your hotel you will be picked up and taken by private transfer to Poroy train station to begin your journey to Machu Picchu on board the Vistadome train. The Vistadome train features large windows on the side and on the ceiling of the train allowing for a panoramic view of the breathtaking scenery. The journey through the Urubamba valley takes 3 hours 50 minutes before arriving at Aguas Calientes. A light snack is served on board.

Tour of Machu Picchu

On arrival you will be met by your local tour guide who will accompany you onto the bus which takes you up the mountain to the Machu Picchu archeological site (30 minute bus journey). Hidden in the Eastern Andes mountains, the Holy City of Machu Picchu is an extraordinary example of ancient Inca architecture and engineering. Built in a seemingly impossible location on the side of a jagged mountain Machu Picchu is Peru’s most iconic sight. Your local guide will show you around the citadel and explain to you it’s intriguing and mysterious history. A buffet lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge is included. After the tour there is some time for you to explore the site on your own before you are taken by bus back down the mountain and shown to your hotel. Dinner is included at your hotel.

NEED TO KNOW: Due to limited storage space on the train each person is only allowed to take one small backpack. This means for tonight when you stay in Aguas Calientes you will only have access to this bag. The remainder of your luggage will be transferred from your hotel in Cusco to your hotel in the Sacred Valley and it will be there waiting for you when you arrive the following day.

Day 13 - Second entrance to Machu Picchu & train to Sacred Valley

Today we have included a second entrance ticket to Machu Picchu so you have the opportunity to explore the site once more independently. Those with moderate fitness and who are not afraid of heights can choose to climb Huayna Picchu for excellent panoramic views of the entire site. If you would like to climb Huayna Picchu please let us know in advance because we will need to get you a permit. Permits are limited and in some cases they may be sold out for that day. For Huayna Picchu we would also need to book one of two daily slots, either 07:00am or 10:00am.

The views from the top of Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain are well worth the steep climb! Ask your dedicated Peru specialist for more information on both options.

Train journey to Ollantaytambo

In the afternoon take the train for the 1 hour 40 minute journey to Ollantaytambo station in the Sacred Valley where you will be greeted and shown to your hotel just next door to the train station.

The rest of the afternoon and evening is at your leisure.

Day 14 - Final day at leisure

A free day to relax in your hotel or explore the Sacred Valley. You could visit Pisac market, Inca sites, go kayaking, horse riding, hiking and much more. Please let us know if you would like us to organise an additional excursion for today

Day 15 - Transfer to the airport for departure

Check-out and private transfer from your hotel to the airport (about 1.5 hours) for your direct flight to Lima.
