About this tour

This indulgent private tour takes in Peru’s most spectacular sites whilst staying in the best possible accommodation. Start in Lima, Peru’s foodie hot spot before flying to the Sacred Valley to explore this idyllic rural area with a private local guide. Continue by luxury Hiram Bingham train to arrive at Machu Picchu in style before exploring the fascinating city of Cusco. Fly from here to the remote city of Iquitos, only accessible by plane or boat, to board the Aria, a small luxury expedition vessel. Cruise the Amazon for three nights in style before returning home.

Day 1 - Meet and greet & transfer to hotel

On arrival to Lima you will be met by your friendly driver and guide who will welcome you to Peru, help you with your luggage and take you by private transfer to your hotel. The rest of the evening is at your leisure.

Day 2 - Cultural tour of Lima with a private local guide

This morning after breakfast you will be met at your hotel by your private guide and driver to begin your tour of Lima. You begin with a tour of the bohemian neighbourhood of Barranco, the artists corner of Lima with its colourful republican houses, grand colonial mansions and intriguing cultural history. Home to writers, photographers and artists, Barranco is full of galleries and museums. You will visit the Puente de los suspiros which is a bridge where partners have left padlocks as a homage to their love. You will also visit the main square and admire the views of the ocean. After this you continue to Casa Aliaga which is the oldest continuously inhabited colonial mansion in the Southern hemisphere. The same family still live there to this day and inside there is an interesting collection of paintings and other art. Finally you will visit the impressive Santo Domingo convent, an architectural masterpiece that houses a collection of paintings and relics of Peruvian saints. Lunch in a local restaurant is included before returning to your hotel.

Day 3 - Flight to Cusco & transfer to the Sacred Valley

Private transfer from your hotel in Lima to the airport for your flight to Cusco.

On arrival you will be met by your private guide and taken by private transfer to your hotel in the Sacred Valley (about 1.5 hours).

The rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure.

Day 4 - Full day private tour of the Sacred Valley

After breakfast this morning you will be met at your hotel by your private guide and driver for the day to begin exploring the Sacred Valley at your own pace, accompanied by your expert local guide. You will visit the Awanakancha camelid centre which is a must-see attraction in the Sacred Valley. Here you will learn about the different types of Camelids including Llamas, Alpacas, Vicuñas and Guanacos. The local villagers will also show you how they use the fur to create their traditional textiles. A few miles away from here is Pisac Market, one of the best markets in the country. Located in a quaint town, the artisan market offers a variety of locally made textiles, jewelry, ceramics and other crafts. Lunch is included at a local restaurant. In the afternoon you will visit Ollantaytambo, an ancient Inca town and fortress. Your guide will teach you about the history of this impressive archeological site. Finally you will visit the small town of Chinchero which is the centre of textile making in Peru. There is a small adobe church, Inca terraces and a smaller market. After the tour you will be returned to your hotel.

Day 5 - A day at leisure in the Sacred Valley

We can arrange a variety of activities in the Sacred Valley including horse riding, hiking, river rafting, mountain biking, cultural tours and more. Please let us know if you would like us to organise another excursion.

Day 6 - Luxury Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu

This morning after breakfast you will be taken by private transfer from your hotel to the train station at Ollantaytambo to catch the luxury Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu. At the train station you will be greeted with a welcome drink as you board the train. On board a gourmet lunch is served. Enjoy the beautiful scenery from the observatory car or take a drink in the bar. This train takes about 1 hour 50 minutes.

On arrival to Aguas Calientes you will be greeted by your professional private guide who will accompany you on the bus that takes you remaining way up the mountain to the Machu Picchu archeological site (30 minute journey). Hidden in the Eastern Andes mountains, the Holy City of Machu Picchu is an extraordinary example of ancient Inca architecture and engineering. Built in a seemingly impossible location on the side of a jagged mountain Machu Picchu is an iconic sight. Your private local guide will show you around the citadel and explain to you it’s intriguing and mysterious history. Then you will be taken to the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge for afternoon tea. After some free time at the site you will be accompanied back to Aguas Calientes and taken to your hotel. Dinner is included at your hotel.

Day 7 - Second entrance to Machu Picchu & train to Cusco

Today we have included a second entrance ticket to Machu Picchu so you have the opportunity to explore the site once more independently. Those with moderate fitness and who are not afraid of heights can choose to climb Huayna Picchu for excellent panoramic views of the entire site. If you would like to climb Huayna Picchu please let us know in advance because we would need to get you a permit. Permits are limited and in some cases they may be sold out for that day. For Huayna Picchu we can book one of two daily slots, either 07:00am or 10:00am.

Return train journey to Cusco

Take advantage of the VIP lounge at Aguas Calientes station before boarding the train back to Cusco. The journey takes approximately 3 hours and 50 minutes. A gourmet dinner is served on board in the dining car. Upon arrival into Cusco you will be met at the station and taken by private transfer to your hotel where the rest of your luggage will be waiting for you. The rest of the evening is at leisure.

Day 8 - Private tour of historic Cusco

This morning you will be met at your hotel after breakfast by your expert local guide and driver for your private tour of the city. You begin by driving slightly outside of the city centre to the magnificent nearby ruins of Sacsayhuaman, an ancient citadel built using enormous stones carved and fitted together tightly without mortar. Near to here there is the lookout point at Cristo Blanco which is white statue of Christ overlooking the city. Returning to the city you will walk through the historic centre with your guide and visit the Qoricancha (golden temple). At the time of the Inca empire this temple was dedicated to the worship of the Sun God and the interior walls were once completely covered in gold. From here we stroll through Cusco’s main plaza and visit the imposing cathedral which contains an exquisite collection of 17th and 18th century paintings by the Cusco school of painters. The tour ends at the San Pedro Market, a vibrant local market selling everything from normal items like pastries, fresh juices and vegetables to more unusual local delicacies such as cooked guinea pigs, pickled snakes and whole donkey heads!

Day 9 - Flight to the Amazon to begin your luxury cruise

After breakfast you will be met at your hotel and taken by private transfer to the airport (about 30 minutes) for your flight via Lima to Iquitos.

On arrival to Iquitos you will be welcomed by representatives of the Aria Amazon expedition cruise and taken along with other guests to the dock for boarding and check in. There is time for you to settle into your handsomely appointed and generously sized suite before the safety drill and briefing which is carried out on the upper deck. After this you will be introduced to your naturalist guides and the cruise director in the air conditioned lounge and enjoy a more detailed presentation about your upcoming adventure. Over the next three days you will sail along Ucayali and Marañon, the two largest tributaries of the Amazon as well as the Amazon itself.

Welcome dinner

This evening toast the start of your exciting journey with fine South American wine and a gourmet menu designed by Pedro Schiaffino, owner of the renown Malabar restaurant in Lima and one of Peru’s best chefs. The inventive menu focusses on local produce found in the Amazon and vegetarian options are available. There is time for a night cap under the stars on the upper deck before retiring to your suite.

Day 10 - The Yarapa River and canoeing at Lake Clavero

Rise early this morning to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over the Amazon river from the upper deck before a scrumptious Peruvian breakfast is served.

This morning we will board our comfortable private skiffs to explore the Yarapa river, slowly floating past local fishermen paddling in their dugout canoes. From the boat your naturalist guide will be point out many different species of birds such as terns, tropical songbirds and black collared hawks. Sloths can also be spotted in the trees above. After returning to the Aria lunch is served in the comfort of the air conditioned dining room.

This afternoon the on board naturalist guides give a lecture in the lounge on natural history and the unique Amazon eco system. We sail to Lake Clavero where there is the opportunity to swim in the lake’s calm waters and visit the local community to learn a bit more about how they live. We return to the Aria in the evening for dinner and a traditional pisco sour on the upper deck as we watch the sunset over the Amazon.

Day 11 - Black water stream & jungle of mirrors

After a hearty breakfast we board our private skiffs to explore the fascinating black water stream part of the vast flooded forest within the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. As we move through the tunnel of leaves your naturalist guide will tell you about the unique riparian vegetation a different flora and fauna. Watch carefully for parrots, macaws and monk saki monkeys in the trees. On return to the Aria we have time for an optional Peruvian cooking lesson and demonstration before lunch.

After lunch there is time for an optional siesta or a lecture in the lounge by the on board naturalist guides.

This afternoon we explore the Dorado river taking a magical journey through the “jungle of mirrors” where the water acts as a mirror for towering trees. As we move through this enchanting area we can spot macaws, primates, parrots, alligators, frogs and bats.

We return to the the Aria for a presentation by the crew and dinner. As we dine we continue our journey upstream toward the headwaters of the Amazon River where the Ucayali and Marañon rivers combine.

Day 12 - Birthplace of the Amazon & departure

Today the Aria skirts the edge of the vast Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, a flooded forest covering more than 5 million acres at the headwaters of the Amazon basin. We have an early breakfast so that we can witness the sun rising over the origin of the Amazon river. At this point the joining of the Ucayali and Marañon rivers form an impressive waterfall. After breakfast we board our small private boats and glide along the serene river to the sound of birdsong as past large billed terns, laughing falcons, exotic short tailed parrot and dozens of other multicoloured birds.

We have the opportunity to visit a local village, meet and interact with the villagers and learn about their traditions and way of life. Your naturalist guide explains how the Aria cruise works with these communities. You will also have the opportunity to shop for local handicrafts directly from the artisans. After a light lunch back on board the Aria we disembark and travel back towards the airport. On the way there is time to visit a rescue centre for the endangered Amazon manatees and learn about their conservation efforts. Our guides will help you check in at the airport and say goodbye as you board your flight back to Lima.
