Casa del Balam, meaning ‘house of the jaguar’, is a family run hotel in the heart of Merida. The property is one of the few remaining original art deco houses in the city which was restored in 1970. This also makes it one of the oldest hotels in the city. The main building at the front is arranged around an interior courtyard, and at the back there is an additional modern building.

The rooms are decorated with beautifully tiled floors and wrought iron and dark wood antique furniture. Rooms are simple but spacious and come with everything you need to feel at home including cable TV, air conditioning, a small table and chairs, ensuite bathrooms, hair dryers and sound proofed windows. There is a good sized L shaped swimming pool in the garden with sun loungers and a restaurant and bar. Other facilities include a small boutique and silver shop, a concierge, business centre and a baby sitting service.
