Pre-Antarctic Cruise Frequently Asked Questions

Can you arrange pre and post Antarctic Cruise travel?

Absolutely - as you can hopefully see from this website we are specialists in Central and South American travel! Just above you will see we have a section on what we recommend for pre and / or post Antarctica Cruise travel and please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your requirements.

What clothing should I bring on an Antarctic Cruise?

They say there's no such thing as bad weather on our Antarctica boat tours, only bad gear! Don't skimp on the gear you bring. Layered clothing with a waterproof outer layer is the best including good waterproof coursers for landings. Additional insulation is provided by the air between layers. For landings you will be provided with insulated rubber boots and on the ship you will need sturdy, non-slip footwear. The ships require that you dress casually and in an informal manner at all times.

What time is embark and disembarkation for my Antarctic Cruise?

Embarkation is usually from around noon for several hours. The final time will be sent to you closer to the departure date. Disembarkation is usually from 8am in the morning but again, this will be confirmed closer to departure.

Where do Antarctic Cruise depart from & when do I need to be there?

Most cruises depart and return to Ushuaia at the Southern tip of Argentina. Some tours may also start from Punta Arenas in Chile or Puerto Madryn in Argentina and it may also be possible to join some cruises in the Falkland Islands.

We strongly advise arriving the day before your cruise ship departs - so at least one night in the port of embarkation - as the ship cannot wait for late arrivals and flight schedules are not always reliable. It is impossible to try and join the ship once it has started the cruise.

How far in Advance do I need to book an Antarctic Cruise?

With a limited number of ships and high demand throughout most of the Antarctic cruise season booking ahead as far in advance as you can is highly recommended to ensure you can get the ship and cabin category you prefer. The majority book these trips a year in advance but if you want the full range of choice for Christmas, New Year and much of January booking 18 months ahead when the sailing schedules come out is recommended.

Must I be insured to take one of your Antarctic trips?

Yes. All passengers should have a Travel Insurance. The Plan must include coverage for personal injury, medical expenses and repatriation costs, as well as evacuation expenses. It includes coverage for cancellations, curtailments, trip interruptions, and any other expenses that might be incurred due to loss, damage, injury or delay to any passenger. We recommend that all policies have at least USD 150,000 or equivalent level of evacuation coverage, as an Antarctica evacuation can be at least this amount. We will need information about the carrier and policy number as well as a 24-hour contact phone number.

What Time Zone is Antarctica in?

The short answer is that most Antarctic Cruises operate on the same time zone as Ushuaia, Argentina which is GMT +3.

However, interesting questions are raised because the South Pole is located on Antarctica, and so Antarctica can be found on all lines of longitude. Although Antarctica is theoretically located in all time zones, it can be difficult to pinpoint which one would be most appropriate due to extreme day-night cycles south of the Antarctic Circle. Practically, time zones are usually determined by territorial claims. However, many stations use either the time zone of their supply bases or the time of their country of ownership. McMurdo Station, Amundsen Scott South Pole Station, and Christchurch, New Zealand use New Zealand time. Because they are part of different countries, stations near each other can have different time zones. Because nothing is set, many areas don't have a time zone. There are no temporary settlements with clocks. They are simply marked with UTC time.

Are Visas Required to Visit Antarctica?

There are no visa requirements for a visit to Antarctica but you should check if you need a visa for pre and post country travels although most passport holders do not need visas for Chile and Argentina.

Life on Board an Antarctic Cruise FAQs

Are there laundry facilities aboard Antarctic Cruises?

Yes, all ships have a laundry service with the usual turnaround being 24 hours and prices are similar to what a hotel would charge. If you have delicate items with special washing requirements it may be best to wait until you are back on land to do those.

Is it cold inside the ships?

Not at all - the ship interiors are kept at room temperature so there is no need for warm clothes whilst inside the ship although you will need to wrap up to go out on deck.

Can I get internet on an Antarctic Cruise?

Although WIFI is available on many ships, it tends to be limited and only in certain areas. It is possible for the signal to be weak in your cabin depending on where it is located. If you have trouble connecting, it's worth moving around. Note that internet access usually has to be purchased at the ship's reception. Fixed-price 'cards, which give you a predetermined amount of data allowance, are available. This cost will be added to the final cruise tab. In one of your briefings, the exact procedure will be explained to you on board.

Note that the internet connection relies on satellites and service may be unreliable so don't count on being able to use at any time and let your family and friends know that you may be uncontactable for days at a time so they don't worry. Also, the signal is appropriate for light usage only - not for uploading photos or videos.

Will there be mobile coverage on the Antarctic Cruise?

Once you have left the port of embarkation there will be little or, more likely, no mobile coverage during the entire trip. In true emergencies the ships do have satellite phones for both inching and outgoing calls (so relatives could contact you).

What Voltage and Plug Sockets are used on Antarctic Cruise Ships?

On the ship either US style sockets (type A) with 2 flat pins or European style sockets (Type C) with 2 round pins will be used depending on the ship. More details will be in the documentation given prior to the Cruise.

Argentinian plug sockets have 3 flat prongs (Type I) and Chile's plug socket is Type C with 2 round prongs.

What Languages are Spoken on Board Antarctic Cruise Ships?

The predominant language for all onboard communications is English although there may some departures that operate in other languages. Passengers tend to be drawn from a wide range of countries and English is simply the unifying language.

Of course, Chile and Argentina are Spanish speaking countries so pre and post trips travel is in countries where the main language is Spanish although most people that work in tourism speak decent English in these countries.

What Food and Drink is served on board an Antarctic Cruise?

The expedition cruise ships offer, in our experience, surprisingly decent food with good size portions. Ships have a shared dining area with refectory-style seating and the dining areas are a good place to socialise and discuss the day.

While breakfast is usually a buffet and lunch and dinner are typically served with table service. There are often three courses and a choice between a starter and main dish. There is always a vegetarian option. Some alcohol is sometimes included at dinner but mostly this will be ordered by you and added to your tab to be settled at the end of the voyage.

You can always get tea and coffee onboard, and most ships have a self-service station that you can use at any hour. Every ship provides drinking water.

Can specific dietary requirements be catered for on an Antarctic Cruise?

Expedition ships can cater to many dietary needs. However, due to the limited size of the galley kitchens onboard and the challenging supply chain, not all requests can be accommodated. So specific kosher or vegan options are not generally available. To make it easy to identify, vegetarian and gluten-free options are often labeled accordingly.

It is important to inform the ship of any dietary restrictions before embarkation. This can be done by filling out the pre-voyage forms which ask about any special food requests. If you have a severe food allergy, it is advisable to inform the catering manager before your first meal.

Is smoking allowed on board?

Smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship but ships will have a designated outside area where smoking is permitted. The rules are strictly enforced and backed up by maritime law which allows for a USD 1,000 fine to be added to your onboard account if violated as well as restrictions on participation in activities.

What are the tipping guidelines on an Antarctic Cruise?

Tipping is much appreciated by the crew but at the same time they should not be asking for tips. Usually, passengers tip for the entire crew at the end of the voyage by putting money in an envelope and handing it in on disembarkation. The tip will then be split amounts the crew in pre-determined portions. Of course, you can discreetly tip staff who you think have made a particular effort for you over and above the norm expected. We recommend a collective tipping rate of around £10 / USD 14 per day.

What Currency is used on board an Antarctic Cruise?

Most ships accept credit cards and either US dollars and / or Euros and often there is a currency exchange facility on board. On most ships you run a tab for bar, laundry and souvenir purchases against your berth and settle the bill at the end of the trip by cash or card.

Can I pay with a credit card on an Antarctic Cruise?

Most ships not only prefer credit card payments but may also only accept credit card payments as opposed to cash USD or Euros. It is common practice for each passenger to maintain a tab and settle up once shortly before disembarkation.

Antarctic Cruise Medical & Safety FAQs

Are their age limits for Antarctic Cruises?

There is no upper age limit on Antarctic Cruises but most ships will not allow children under 12 years old simply because these specialist expedition ships are not designed with children in mind.

How Fit should I be for an Antarctic Cruises?

Passengers should have reasonable mobility as this is required to get on and off the Zodiac landing boats as well as safely move around a ship on poor weather and, of course, on snow and ice during landings. Ships tend to have steeper than average stairs and although some will have lifts as well these may not be in use during bad weather so you must be confident with such stairs. Beyond this there are no fitness requirements and no upper age limits.

Is there a doctor on board an Antarctic Cruise Ship?

Each voyage has an English-speaking, currently-practicing doctor who is experienced in Emergency medicine. A doctor is available to assist passengers at all shore landings.

Are there fees for medical assistance on board?

Medical consultations, rendered services, and the dispensing of medical supplies are generally free to guests. Only rare cases where more specialist care is required are the exceptions and charges may apply.

What if I have a pre-existing medical condition?

Each guest must complete a medical questionnaire prior to boarding. This is reviewed by the ship's Medical staff, who will contact you if there are any concerns about the safety of your voyage. For any medical emergency, all guests are required to complete a medical questionnaire.

We recommend that passengers with serious medical problems or issues visit their doctor to get the "fit to fly" stamp of approval. If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to check with your doctor as soon as possible. Always bring extra medication and other medical supplies.

What happens if I have a serious medical issue?

In the event o a serious medical issue the onboard doctor will stabilize the patient. The patient can then be evacuated to the closest facility or airport. There are limitations to the treatment that our doctors can provide and evacuations may take longer in remote areas. This is a risk that has to be understood by any taking such a trip like this.

What Covid Protocols are in place for Antarctic Cruises?

This varies a little between cruises and is something subject to frequent updates so we will advise on Covid protocols on a ship by ship basis and final information on this will be sent shortly before departure. All ships will require you to be vaccinated againat Covid possibly with a booster as well and most ships insist on a negative Covid test within 3 days prior to embarkation

Will I get Sea Sick on An Antarctic Cruise?

Sea sickness and your susceptibility to it varies enormously among individuals and you probably have a fair idea already how prone to sea sickness you are. Most people will feel some discomfort, even when taking medication to prevent sea sickness. It is more rare though that conditions are so bad that your overall enjoyment of the trip will be badly impaired.

Of course, it is impossible to know in advance how rough the sea passages will be and it is wise to assume they will be moderately rough. The Drake Passage takes up to 2 days to cross and many will confine themselves to cabins for much of that if it is a rough crossing. However, once Antarctica is reached the waters tend to be much calmer as the sea ice and inlets have and dampening and sheltering effect on the swell and one of the quirks of sea sickness is the rapid recovery you feel once conditions improve.

It is also worth remembering that most people do adapt to the ships movement and that most ships have stabilising features which reduce movement. All ships have an onboard doctor who can dispense medication to help with sea sickness.

For the various routes the days of likely rough seas are as follows:

● Drake Passage Ushuaia to the Peninsula - 1.5 to 2 days (each way)
● Ushuaia to the Falklands - 1.5 days
● Falklands to South Georgia - 2 days
● South Georgia to the Peninsula - 3 to 3.5 days

What Vaccinations are Required to Visit Antarctica?

There are no specific vaccinations required for an Antarctic trip except for Covid vaccination on most ships. The main area you are likely to come up against vaccination requirements or recommendations are on your South America travel pre and post trip. Please see our travel advice sections for Chile and Argentina for further details.
