Paraty was originally inhabited by the indigenous Guaianá people before it was formally established by the Portuguese in the late 17th century after the discovery of gold in Minas Gerais. Serving as an important port to transport the gold to Rio and then to Portugal the town flourished. Nowadays artists, chef’s and bohemian types have moved in and relaxation is the order of the day! It is warm most of the year in Paraty and therefore can be visited all year round. The hottest period is over the summer which runs from November until February. This is also the most humid time of year and there are frequent storms. You should expect some rain whatever time of year you travel. March until May is a lovely time to go as it is a little cooler and there is usually less rain. June, July and August are the winter months when temperatures are at their lowest. September until November is spring which is another great time to visit with less crowds and temperatures on the rise.
