Paraty was originally inhabited by the indigenous Guaianá people before it was formally established by the Portuguese in the late 17th century after the discovery of gold in Minas Gerais. Serving as an important port to transport the gold to Rio and then to Portugal the town flourished. Nowadays artists, chef’s and bohemian types have moved in and relaxation is the order of the day! The quiet, pedestrianised cobblestone centre with its white washed buildings and quaint churches is the perfect place to wander on foot during your Brazil travel tour
whilst the best beaches and untouched islands are reached by boat.
