The Pacuare river runs through a 25,000 acre protected reserve of virgin rainforest with steep sided gorges and dense impenetrable jungle. Turrialba is a mountainous area dominated by the huge Irazú and Turriabla volcanoes. The area is scattered with coffee and sugar plantations and offers a wide variety of activities such as horse riding, canyoneering, birdwatching and visits to the Guayabo National Monument, an interesting pre-Columbian archeological site.
