PUERTO VIEJO | COSTA RICA

Why Visit Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica?

"Relaxed and easy going, the low key surfer town of Puerto Viejo, tucked away on the southern Caribbean coast, is full of good vibes!"

Puerto Viejo is a sleepy and quirky beach town situated on the Caribbean coast in Costa Rica’s far flung south eastern corner. Expect surf shacks, bamboo bars and the sound of reggae music wafting down the dusty streets. Beaches are wild and beautiful and fringed by thick jungle where sloths hang lazily in the trees. Further along the southern Caribbean coast there is the Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, a fantastic spot for enjoying Costa Rica’s tropical nature. Bike rides are a favourite pass time in this relaxed and lesser visited region. There is also good kayaking and snorkeling. It is a more off the beaten path destination that is slowly becoming more popular due to some lovely new hotels recently opening. It is one of our favourite corners of the country!

When is the Best Time to Visit Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica?

Puerto Viejo and the Caribbean side of Costa Rica generally has quite unpredictable weather. The usual ‘dry’ and ‘green’ seasons are less defined here and rain falls more evenly throughout the year.

January until May is a popular time to go because it coincides with the dry season in the rest of the country. However, the months of August to October are the driest here and a great time to visit, which is the opposite to the rest of the country.

Please bear in mind that this area is rainforest and you should expect rain at any time of year.
