San Jose is Costa Rica’s busy capital city and most of the architecture is somewhat unremarkable. Most visitors will likely spend no more than one or two nights at the beginning and end of their Costa Rica escorted tours. Having said this, if you can look past the noisy traffic there are more historic neighbourhoods such as Barrio Amón where you will find some interesting old colonial mansions. The theatre adds a bit of grandeur and the art, gold and jade museums are all cultural highlights. The bustling Central Market is worth a visit to witness daily life in action. The best time to visit San Jose is from December until May.

The capital city of Costa Rica is located in the middle of the country and has a slightly cooler climate to other areas. The first half of the year is the drier, but also the cooler time of year. The second half of the year is wetter, hotter and more humid.

The most rain occurs in September and October.
