TORTUGUERO | COSTA RICA

Why Visit Tortuguero in Costa Rica?

"Watch the monkeys in the trees as you glide along the quiet Tortuguero canals – you might even spot a sloth or a bright green lizard!"

Tortuguero is the name for the tiny village of about 1300 people and the adjacent national park. A remote destination only accessible by plane or boat, Tortuguero can best be described as a network of jungle canals along Costa Rica’s Northern Caribbean coast. Teeming with wildlife, the protected national park is a labyrinth of waterways visited by boat. The area is also an important breeding ground for Green Sea Turtles as well as other species. Between July and October you can watch the turtles coming ashore to make their nests. One of Costa Rica’s best spots for wildlife.

When is the Best Time to Visit Tortuguero in Costa Rica?

Tortuguero is sometimes described as a ‘little Amazon’. It is a rainforest and one of the rainiest parts of Costa Rica. You should prepare for rain at any point during the year.

The climate on this side of the country doesn’t subscribe to the usual dry season/wet season divide. Rain is more evenly distributed throughout the year. It also remains hot and humid year round.

If you want to see the Green Sea turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs on a night tour you need to go between July and October. It is also slightly drier this time of year. However, please be aware September and October are the rainiest months for the rest of the country.
